Why Fish?

Fish are often seen as “lesser” animals in an anthropocentric worldview where we give the most empathy and moral consideration to animals that are more similar to us, whether it is primates or fellow mammals. I believe fish are just as deserving of care and attention as any other creature on this earth, and I want to use the Photoshop skills I have learned in this class to tell the stories of four fish that inspire me in the hopes that I can make at least one other person care as much about them as I do.

One of my favorite moments of last fall was when I gave a presentation on the Devils Hole Pupfish in my desert conservation class, and afterwards a classmate came up to me and said, “wow, I never thought I’d care so much about a fish!” My portfolio is an expansion of that moment, including the Devils Hole pupfish, as well as three other species of fish I think deserve time in the spotlight.
